Hong Kong Orchid
The Hong Kong Orchid is a sterile hybrid of the Orchid tree making it more yard friendly as it does not drop messy pods in the fall. This tree is considered one of the most beautiful of the Orchid trees with its showy green leaves and dramatic purple-red flowers which bloom late fall through early winter. The tree prefers full sun but can handle light shade as well growing to 20 feet tall and spreading up to 25 feet wide.
When other plants are not in bloom, this breathtaking tree will continue to bloom and light up your landscape, with beautiful purple-flowering. The blossoms usually appear from January through May.
The flowers attract butterflies and birds including hummingbirds.
This tree is considered moderately cold-tolerant and grows best in Zone 10 and warmer areas of Zone 9B.
Though these trees are evergreen, they can lose leaves in, especially cold winter.
