Gumbo Limbo
The Gumbo Limbo, a tropical tree native to the southeastern United States, is an ornamental tree that provides excellent shade. The bark is one of its differentiators as it is shiny dark red and peals of rather easily. It can grow from 50-60 feet in height with strong, massive branches and a rounded crown of leaves. The oblong leather-like leaves are bright green on top and paler on the bottom. The dark red fruit is attractive to mockingbirds and other birds in the summer and fall months. This tree is noted for being one of the most wind-resistant trees.
Best in Zone 10, gumbo limbo is a fast grower you can plant in full sun to partial shade.
