This massive and magnificent palm rules the landscape with its aristocratic size and tropical beauty, it outshines all other palm varieties.

Canary palm i's such a beautiful and hardy tree, able to survive dry spells, cold snaps, and apparently air pollution -- that it's planted in tropical and semitropical areas worldwide, including along streets in Florida and California.

The native home of this date palm is the Canary Islands, The Canary Island date palm can be identified by its thick trunk covered in diamond-shaped leaf scars, splays of inedible, orange fruits, and resplendent crown of over one hundred feather-shaped fronds. The lower leaflets grow into stout spines.

This is a slow grower to 40 feet. Give it plenty of room since the wide-spreading fronds stay low to the ground for many years as the trunk slowly forms. The trunk is textured with a diamond pattern. The leaves can get up to 20 feet long and are medium green. Does require a medium amount of water when young but drought tolerant when mature.

In spite of its tropical look, a Canary Island date is one of the best cold hardy palms - fine anywhere in Zone 9 and southward.

This palm is moderately salt-tolerant and needs a full sun location.
