Looking to add a bit of drama, structure, texture, and color to your landscape. Consider adding an Agave.

Agave, aka Century Plant, is a long-leaved succulent plant that naturally forms a rosette of fleshy, shape edge tipped with a sharp point. The agave plant is drought tolerant and perennial, which makes it ideal for a mature arid garden. Excellent potted and container plants both indoors and outdoor settings.

There are approximately 200 species of Agaves, available in a variety of sizes, ranging from smaller than mature at 1-2 feet, perfect for containers, to larger specimens. Agave color patterns range from gray and green, some have a hint of blue and red, as well as others that are variegated with white or yellow. Most agaves prefer the sun, but some can survive temperatures as low as the 20s. These sculptural succulents will add an impressive design element to your water-wise garden or patio container.

Things to consider when planting Agave:

Plant agave away from high-traffic areas such as walkways. The edges and pointed tips of agave leaves are very sharp and can cause injuries..

Height:

Agaves range in size from few inches to as large as 20 feet in diameter.

Light:

Worship full sun. Some do well in partial shade. Avoid planting them where they will have to endure the blistering desert sun.

Watering:

Established plants require water once or twice a week. Eventually, agaves prefer to dry out between each watering. Overwatering may cause root rot.

Soil:

These plants like sandy, rocky, and well-drained soil are the key to a healthy agave.
