Hibiscus plants are known for their large colorful flowers. Growing hibiscus is an easy way to add exotic appeal to your garden. The Hibiscus, which blooms year-round in south Florida, is one of the most popular flowering plants in Florida with over 200 species. The shrub comes in a variety of sizes and colors with both bush and tree forms.

The plants can grow to 20 feet tall. Flowers may be up to 6 inches in diameter, with colors ranging from yellow to peach to red. Hibiscus can be planted as an informal screen or grown as a hedge, they can also be pruned into a single-stemmed small tree.

There are two main types of hibiscus: Perennial hibiscus (multiple species) grow like shrubs and tropical hibiscus which makes an excellent container plant for poolscapes or patios during the summer. Both types have large, colorful flowers, but tropical hibiscus tends to bloom longer than perennial hibiscus.

The flowers are attractive to butterflies and hummingbirds.

Upon initial planting, hibiscus plants require lots of water but once established plants can tolerate moist or dry conditions. The shrub prefers direct sunlight.
